Atmashatakam Stotra. A tribute to the great Adi Shankarachary. ॐ नमः शिवाय। ॐ नमः शिवाय। कोहम! म्हणजे मी कोण आहे? आणि त्यानंतर हें सर्व ब्रह्मांड म्हणजे काय आहे? ह्या प्रश्नांनी माणसाला अगदी पुरातन काळापासून भेडसावलें आहे. स्टीफन हॉकिंग्ज़ सारख्या शास्त्रज्ञांनी देखील ह्या निर्मितीमागचें सूत्र म्हणजे ह्याच प्रश्नांची उत्तरें शोधण्याचा प्रयत्न केला आणि आजदेखील शास्त्रज्ञांना त्याचेंच उत्तर हवें आहे. आपल्या शास्त्रज्ञ ऋषीमुनींनी देखील हजारो वर्षांपूर्वी ह्या उत्तरांसाठीच प्रचंड साधना केली. जगभरामध्यें अनेक दिग्गजांनी आपापल्या पद्धतीनें ही उत्तरें मांडली आहेत. त्या उत्तरांमध्यें समाधान शोधणें आपल्या हातात आहे. आदि शंकराचार्यांनी अतिशय प्रभावी शैलीमध्यें आणि गेय्य रूपामध्यें सहा श्लोकांत "मी कोण आहे" ह्या प्रश्नाचें उत्तर समाधानकारक रीतीने दिले आहे जें आत्मषटकम अथवा निर्वाण षट्कम स्तोत्र ह्या नांवानें प्रसिद्ध आहे. "मी कोण आहे" हें समजावुन सांगण्यासाठीं त्यांनी प्रथम "मी कोण नाहीं" हें सांगण्यावर भर दिला आणि मग "मी शिव म्हणजे कोण आहे" तें सांगितलें. त्यांच्या सारखा जगद्गुरु ज्या भूमीमध्यें अवतीर्ण झाला त्याच भूमीमध्यें आपण जन्माला आलो हें आपले महदभाग्यच आहे. पूज्य शंकराचार्यांनी रचलेल्या मूळ संस्कृत श्लोकांचा अर्थ मराठी आणि इंग्रजी अशा दोन्ही भाषांमध्यें सांगण्याचा हा अल्पसा प्रयत्न आहे. भाषेचा अडथळा दूर करुन सर्व जगासमोर शंकराचार्यांची शिकवण आणणें इतकाच माझा या मागील हेतूं आहे. प्रथम सर्व श्लोक एकत्र बघुन मग एकेका श्लोकाचा आढावा घेऊया. Om Namah Shivay! Om Namah Shivay! Who am I is the basic question and then what is this entire material world is the next question. Man has been after finding the answers to these questions since ancient times. Even the great scientist of this century like Stephen Hawking tried to find the elemental cause or the casual element behind all creation and now also scientists are struggling to find that answer. Our scientist Rishis and Sages took tremendous efforts and did lot of research thousands of years back to find the same answers. The scholars all over the world have tried to answer these questions in their own ways. It depends on us to find a satisfactory and convincing answer from their theories. The great Adi Shanarachary from India has answered the fundamental question “Who am I” very effectively, convincingly and satisfactorily in beautiful poetic language in six verses which is known as Atma Shatakam or Nirvan Shatakam Stotra. For answering the question "Who am I" he first explained "Who am I not" and then told the secret behind "I am Shivam". We must consider ourselves very fortunate for being born in the same soil of this Motherland India in which Adi Shakaracharya was born. This is a small attempt of translating the original Sanskrut Verses composed by the Guru of the whole world Adi Shakaracharya. The translation will be in Marathi as well as in English. To get rid of the language barrier and put forward Adi Shankaracharya’s preaching in front of the world is the only purpose here. Initially we will see the six Verses together and then go into the meaning of each verse. आत्मषटकम अथवा निर्वाण षट्कम स्तोत्र। मनोबुद्ध्यहङ्कारचित्तानि नाहं न च श्रोत्र जिह्वे न च घ्राण नेत्रे । न च व्योम भूमिर्न तेजो न वायुश्चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ १॥ न च प्राणसंज्ञो न वै पञ्चवायुर्न वा सप्तधातुर्न वा पञ्चकोशः । न वाक्पाणिपादौ न चोपस्थपायुश्चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ २॥ न मे द्वेषरागौ न मे लोभमोहौ मदो नैव मे नैव मात्सर्यभावः । न धर्मो न चार्थो न कामो न मोक्षश्चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ ३॥ न पुण्यं न पापं न सौख्यं न दुःखं न मन्त्रो न तीर्थं न वेदा न यज्ञाः । अहं भोजनं नैव भोज्यं न भोक्ता चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ ४॥ न मृत्युर्न शङ्का न मे जातिभेदः पिता नैव मे नैव माता न जन्म । न बन्धुर्न मित्रं गुरुर्नैव शिष्यश्चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ ५॥ अहं निर्विकल्पो निराकाररूपो विभुर्व्याप्य सर्वत्र सर्वेन्द्रियाणाम् । सदा मे समत्वं न मुक्तिर्न बन्धश्चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ ६॥ ॥ इति श्रीमच्छङ्कराचार्यविरचितं आत्मषट्कं स्तोत्र सम्पूर्णम् ॥ मनोबुद्ध्यहङ्कारचित्तानि नाहं न च श्रोत्र जिह्वे न च घ्राण नेत्रे । न च व्योम भूमिर्न तेजो न वायुश्चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ १॥ Mano Buddhi, Ahankara, Chittani Naaham Nacha Shrotra Jihve Na Cha Ghrana, Netre Nacha Vyoma Bhoomir Na Tejo Na Vayuh Chidananda Rupah Shivoham! Manache Shlok 25 with meaning in English. | Jai Shri Ram | मना वीट मानू नको बोलण्याचा। पुढे मागुता राम जोडेल केंचा। सुखाची घडी लोटतां सूख आहे। पुढें सर्व जाईल काहीं न राहे।। २५ ।. Oh my mind, never get tired or bored of chanting the name of Lord Ram. Try to think of him and chant his name for as much time as possible. Because that is the only way to be in the proximity of Ram and that is the only way of seeking help from him. Do not feel sad after a moment of happiness or pleasure is over because there is a different kind of happiness beyond. Within a short while nothing that you have seen or experienced will remain and everything will disappear. || 25 ||

Manache Shlok 24 with meaning in English. ।२४।। Try to apply and dedicate everything you do to Lord Raghav. By doing so, everything you do will be fruitful. It will be a waste otherwise. Do not do something just because others are doing it and do not behave like someone else. Try to do something on your own. Whenever possible try to chant Lord Ram’s name and speak in praise of GOD. Chanting Ram’s name will destroy your ego and pride and it will also get rid of the sinful greed and unwanted desires. || 24 ||

Manache Shlok 23 with meaning in English. । २३।. Oh my mind, do not waste time in futile discussions, talks and arguments. Try to think about Lord Raghav i.e. Ram and chant his name for as much time as possible. Whatever else you speak with the people otherwise does not give you happiness and peace of mind is also lost because of that. Every minute and every second you live, you are inexorably moving towards death. Time is stealing life from you every moment. When the time comes to depart from this world, you are left alone and no one can help you except Lord Ram. Chanting his name is the best way to seek his help. || 23 ||

Manache Shlok 20 with meaning in English. । २०।. Many become downhearted and frustrated because of unnecessary love and affection for different things and for dear ones in the family or in the society. But after all, getting carried away with emotions is undesired. Getting carried away with love and affection for different things and for our own people results in ultimate suffering and great agony. In reality, everyone born is locked up in the pangs of birth. The days and months in the mother’s womb are like the time spent in a prison. The child is upside down in the mother’s womb and it gives lots of pain and suffering to the still unborn. || 20 ||

Oh my mind, keep the hope of knowing Lord Ram. There is no hope which will be fulfilled without praying Lord Ram. Oh my mind, your fame and achievements here have no value in themselves. They will vanish one day. Lord Ram is the one who is praised and worshipped by ancient Vedas, Epics and all rituals. Praise and worship Lord Ram and every act of yours will become fruitful and praiseworthy. || 18 ||

Manache Shlok 17 with meaning in English. । १७।. All of us remain disturbed and stressed and we carry unnecessary anxiety and worry because our ego makes us feel that we are the doers of whatever is happening in our life or in our family or in our career. But whatever has to happen or whatever is destined, suddenly happens and we do not get even a hint sometimes of what is going to happen. All happy moments, pleasure or sufferings happen as destined and are a result or outcome of our own deeds in the past or may be in the past life. It is all Karma Yog and the sooner we realize, the better it is for us. Only those who do not realize this or those who ignore this keep on mourning for parting or loss of a dear one. The wise ones accept it. || 17 ||

Manache Shlok 16 with meaning in English. । १६।. Someone very dear in the family or in the society dies and others mourn for him or her. The mourning may be for a short while or it may go on forever. But nobody realises that he or she is also going near death every single day. And suddenly time comes, and you are also no more. Throughout our life greed and desires never end. In acquiring and possessing things people remain excited and stressed. And the unfulfilled desires become the prime cause for another birth in this mortal materialistic world. || 16 ||

Manache Shlok 15 with meaning in English. । १५।. Oh my mind, try to find and realise the truth. And the truth is that death is a moral certainty and this earth is where death will catch you. As far as everyone is alive, everyone speaks like “I am this” or “This is mine” and everyone tries to possess more and more. While alive, people talk about immortality and everyone thinks and lives life as if he or she is not going to die or as if he or she has not heard of death. However when the parting moment comes or when death knocks on the door, within a fraction of a second everyone has to leave behind all the acquired things and face death. No luggage or not even a penny is allowed for this final journey. || 15 ||

Manache Shlok 14 with meaning in English. | Jai Shri Ram | Suggestions, recommendations and instructions we should give to our mind for being in a healthy, happy and peaceful state. । १४।. You are born in this world as dictated by your past karma. This birth is a net or partial result of the good and bad things you did in the previous birth or births. Whatever birth you get or whatever Karma you do, you ultimately go to the path treaded by all, the path of death. It is just a matter of time. Even those who lived as Kings or as great people or as Saints, all went towards death the same way as ordinary people. || 14 ||

Oh my mind, do you remember and realize what happened to Ravana the King of Lanka who had once conquered the entire earth and heaven? His Kingdom was suddenly lost in a war within a very short while. Ravana lost his Kingdom and his life also because of his ill intentions and bad desires. Hence learn to restrict temptations of the body and mind. No matter who you are and what you achieve, the omnipresent and persevering time in the form of death will put an end to everything. || 13 ||

Manache Shlok 12 with meaning in English. । १२।. Oh my mind, do not keep on thinking of the sorrow, pain and miseries. That will eventually go. Oh my mind, do not be always touched and disturbed by the grief and by the worries. That will lead to anxiety and stress. With a forethought and rational thinking try to give up craving for your life. Try to reduce the attachment with this body and with the bodily demands. Once you reduce your attachment with the body and stop worrying too much about the futuristic needs and desires, you can enjoy the feeling of ultimate salvation by being free of material hankerings. || 12 ||

Oh my mind, you ask this question to yourself. See the depth of finding the answer to this riddle. Happiness does not come alone. Oh my mind, do not blame anything or anybody or the world for your sufferings. Remember what you are doing and what deeds you have done in the past. All you have got is the result or outcome of whatever you have done in the past or may be in the past births. You are only reaping the fruits of your actions and deeds. || 11 ||

Oh my mind, never hanker after the wealth or belongings of others or keep on expecting wealth from parents or ancestors. Too much selfishness or thinking only about acquiring things for yourself results in accumulation of sins. All your actions which ultimately make you suffer should be considered as sins and should be avoided. Nothing is more painful when everything goes against you or nothing happens the way you want or the way you had planned. So do not plan too much or do not desire too much. || 9 ||

Manache Shlok 8 with meaning in English. । ८।. Live an ideal life so that people remember you when you are no more, for the good things you did throughout your life. Oh my mind, always put such a goal before you when you perform duties and do things for others in your life. Oh my mind, live a life like sandalwood. Sandalwood gets worn out but keeps on giving its good fragrance and calm to others. In the end Sandalwood gets destroyed but because of its properties it pleases and soothes the gentle and good people. || 8 ||
Dvadash Gayatri sadhana SBK Dvadash (12) Gayatri Sadhana! Everyone can enjoy the effect of vibrations created by chanting Mantras and get benefited from the same. This Universe is a game of Energy, Matter and Sound Vibrations and we are a part of it. OM is just a pronunciation and it cannot be a property or monopoly of any cast, sect or religion. Going further to enhance our Mental or Psychological immune power, this Audio presents chanting of Gayatri Mantra 12 times without breath awareness and then 12 times with breath awareness. We speak only while exhaling or we exhale while speaking. Chanting with breath awareness means taking a deep breath and then chanting “OM” or any Mantra as many times as possible while exhaling, before inhaling for the next breath. This is connecting the Mantra Shakti with the Prana Shakti. The pitch for any chanting largely decides the duration of your exhalation. If the pitch is too low or too high then you will finish your exhalation i.e. consume your breath quickly. You have to decide your own normal pitch for prolonged exhalation for giving enough time to the lungs to absorb Oxygen. Mantra is a series of potential sound vibrations which pierce the totality of mind. The efforts of our scientist Rishis and Sages who designed or composed or constructed or fabricated thousands of such Universal Mantras are worth appreciating. Gayatri Mantra is comprised of 24 letters and the effect of pronouncing each letter from it, on our body has been studied and established by Scientists all over the world. Gayatri Mantra is a prayer to Sun God and Sun also cannot be a property or monopoly of any cast, sect or religion. ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यम्, भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् || It begins with “OM” which is the “Pranav” and is believed to be the first ever sound before creation. The Mantra prays the Almighty and means “I adore the Divine Self who illuminates the Physical, Astral and Casual worlds i.e. the entire Universe. I offer my prayers to the GOD who shines like Sun. May he enlighten our intellect the way he does the Universe”. Our Rishis developed a method to chant Gayatri Mantra for deriving maximum possible benefits from it. For that you offer water from the Sea or from the River to the rising or setting Sun while chanting Gayatri Mantra as shown in attached picture. You are supposed to look at the Sunrays through the stream of the water falling from your hands. It is a tonic for your eyes. While doing so we establish a relation with all the five basic elements from which we are born. You are standing on the Earth ( पृथ्वी ) , offering Water (आप ), under the Sky ( आकाश ) , in the Sunlight ( तेज ) , with the Wind ( वायु ). This enhances your Physical and Psychological immunity with a free supply of Vitamin D. If you are not near any Sea or River, do it in the terrace. If that is also not possible do it anywhere else. If nothing like that is possible then just sit on a chair and chant Gayatri Mantra without Water, without Sun, without Sky and without Earth. You will still get all the benefits of the Positive Vibrations on your body and mind to strengthen the Physical and Psychological immunity. It is not recommended to chant Gayatri Mantra after Sunset. Just forget all this and enjoy chanting Gayatri Mantra 108 times as a regular practice. The enjoyment will bring in all the positivity required for a strong body and healthy mind.
